Grinding your teeth, suffering from frequent headaches, dizziness, stiff neck, ear ache, back pain or popping jaw joints?
You may be one of the many undiagnosed TMJ Dysfunction sufferers.
The TMJ Joint (Temporomandibular Joint) refers to the two joints located in front of the ears. These joints attach the lower jaw to the skull and are important in several ways. The TMJ Joint is responsible for performing the following functions; opening and closing the mouth, chewing, swallowing, breathing, talking, yawning and kissing.
TMJ Dysfunction is the name given to conditions affecting this joint. Instigated by bad bite, TMJ Dysfunction can be extremely painful and cause chronic facial pain for sufferers. The key contributor to TMJ Dysfunction is stress. Stress causes the patient to clench down on the jaw, which compresses the jaw points and eventually results in bad bite. A popping sound on opening and closing your mouth is a very common occurrence in TMJ Dysfunction. In such cases the patient's jaw disc is generally dislocated.
Dr Fathi is able to treat and diagnose patients suffering from TMJ Dysfunction through computerized technology. Treatment for TMJ Dysfunction varies depending on the severity of each individual case. The most prominent treatment for TMJ Dysfunction is an Orthotic. Worn while you sleep, the Orthotic prevents patients from grinding their teeth and putting pressure on the TMJ Joints.
Once symptoms
are relieved and the bite has been stabilized; Dr Fathi will then evaluate your condition and determine if stage 2 of treatment is necessary. Stage 2 of treatment addresses the long-term management of TMJ Dysfunction; which will permanently adjust your bite to the correct position. Two ways to permanently correct your bite include:
Orthodontics
Orthodontics focuses on straightening teeth and correcting bite. Braces work by gently pressing on your teeth and moving them into their ideal positions. Your braces will be adjusted periodically so that your teeth and jaw move correctly and efficiently.
